THE CLICHE
She was lonely , she was depressed . She had had enough of Kunle's disloyalty. It seemed as if the more she tried, the less effective she was in getting through to him. It was never like this in the beginning, it was never this difficult, it was never this full of quarrels and fights and banging doors in each other's faces. It was never this full of hurtful words and so much silence that could swallow a horse. How did they get here? From being a power couple to barely saying a word to each other.
She could not even remember the last time he touched her. Oh! Wait a minute , she could remember it was over a year ago. Aaagh! Kunle what had she not done? She had hit the gym immediately after their third child and she even looked more in shape than she had ever been before she had children. Is it dressing up? She was up to date, following all the instragram what nots and doing her best to be in vogue . She had gone as far as getting matching lingerie but Kunle wouldn't even give her a peck or even try to have a conversation with her.
How could her first love treat her this way like she never mattered? It was harder each day ,trying to come to terms with the fact that she too might have to do that which Kunle did to her to him.
Oh life! How quick it was to turn its back on her. From being one of the most sought after single lady in her time, to being in a marriage that was going to be the death of her.
She allowed her mind drift as she packed her children's lunch bags. Oh she remembers how Chike warned her about marrying Kunle, how he promised to give her all the love she needed to last her a life time! But mami refused, she said he was Igbo and poor and She saw reasons with her when Kunle started confusing their poverty state with the good things of life. If only someone had told her that one day that she, Teniola Lois Coker would be weary of all her so called riches or that they were no substitute for real unadulterated love! Aaaagh! How she wished mami was alive to see how her beloved Kunle treated her daughter ? What would become of her now ? What about her marriage? What about her .... "mummy, mummy, your phone is ringing" screamed Tola her youngest daughter, snapping her out of her reverie.
She walked towards the table were her phone was vibrating incessantly hoping and praying that it would be Kunle, calling to check up on the kids. She picked up the phone and She couldn't recognize the number calling. "Hello" She said and a deep familiar male voice that caused her heart to bubble with excitement replied " Hello Teniola, good morning this is Chike Kalu"
